Vitamin D in food


Before the 1930's, one of the major public health concern was diseases resulting from lack of sufficient vitamin D noticeably rickets. But in the 1930s, in the U.S, milk was then strengthened with vitamin D to contain 400 Iu and from then, rickets was eradicated. A glass of such milk contains one-forth of the required daily intake for persons up to 50 years of age.

Effects of insufficient vitamin D.
The common disease caused by vitamin D is mostly bone related because deficiency in vitamin D leads to absence of mineral like calcium and phosphate in the bones. Another disease caused by this condition is rickets, which is a disease that hinders child growth and weak bones. Vitamin D deficiency also result in osteomalacia which can occur in matured bones. It results in fragile bones, proximal muscle weakness and bone-thining disorder.

The first researcher who found out that rickets is as a result of lack of sufficient vitamin D was Edward. Mellanby (1981 - 1920) Adolf Windans also won nobel prize for discovering the 7- dehydrocholesterols which gave birth to vitamin D.

Sources of vitamin D
The common sources of vitamin D is fish. Fish irrier oil, fatty fish which include. Tuna, canned in oil; 200 I U (50% Daily value) cooked eel, 200 I U, cooked salmon, 345 IU (90% Dv), sardine, canned in oil, 250 IU (70% DV, fish liver oils particularly the cod liver oil, 360 IU (340% d) and a whole egg 20 I (6% daily value). The I U measurement of vitamin referes to commonly used means of measure as inter national units.

Lack of this vitamin D dietary as mention above and when supplement is not used may lead to other chromic diseases like the various types of cancer, ranging from breast to prostate cancers. Also it could result in the following diseases;

1. Rhemmatoid arthritis
2. tuberculosis
3. High blood pressure
4. Chromic pain and fatigue
5. Weakness
6. cardiovascular and heart attack
7. Depression and a host of them.


Notwithstanding, vitamin D supplementation is not an ultimate solution to so many of these chronic disease. According to research, taking of vitamin D supplements may result in a more serious adverse effect, in a situation where 25D is low, such as vitamin D hyper sensitively and deregulation. This condition is common in disease.
